Vincent van Gogh was a world famous Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. Some of his drawings and paintings are the most popular and the most expensive pieces in the world. He began working for a firm of art dealers and then took up teaching and missionary work also. He took up the career of an artist only in the 1880s. For some time he worked only with toned-down colors. Then he encountered Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in Paris and soon incorporated their brighter colors and style of painting. He produced more than 2000 works, including about 900 paintings. When his friendship with Paul Gauguin failed, he cut off part of his left ear. He committed suicide on account of recurrent bouts of insanity.
